Store Street

Sir Peter Cook presents... Store Street: Men from the Islands

Monday 23 February 2009, 6.30pm

Continuing on the recent theme of the spread of innovatory architecture way beyond the metropolitan centres, Store Street welcomes two architects who have made a significant impact on their respective islands: Bernardo Rodrigues and Dickon Irwin.

"Bernardo Rodrigues originally comes from the Azores, where most of his built projects (houses, churches and small public buildings) have been made. Recently impressing the same ‘New Trends’ audience in Tokyo as Izaskun Chinchilla and Isabel Hérault (of last month´s Store Street), his mastery of surface and form now reaches a very ambitious level. Rodrigues studied at the FAUP in Oporto (where he has his office) and made postgraduate studies in architecture at Columbia University and executive education at Harvard. His work has been exhibited at the Biennales of Venice, Sao Paulo and Lisbon.
"Dickon Irwin was born in Scotland and made his B.Arch at the Bartlett and Diploma at Cambridge. Meeting (on the postgraduate ‘space syntax’ course) Margarita Kritioti, led to their establishment of the practice Irwin and Kritioti. Winning the competition for the new Nicosia City Hall several years ago led to a complex design process once ancient ruins were subsequently discovered on the site. Their competition-winning entry for the Ocean Terminal at Limmasol, currently on site, is a series of elegant flattened tubes, establishing the practice as a point of innovation.
"Both highly articulate and highly imaginative, we welcome them to Store Street."
